Hello and welcome to the Urban Earth Mama blog!
I am glad you stopped by and hope you find tons of great information and encouragement as you raise your own family in a healthy, whole way while being exceptionally kind to the earth. I have found the internet to be an amazing help in raising my family "green" but have been surprised that there is no definitive resource for the average earth mama. I hope to change that with this simple blog. Here's what I plan on highlighting:
Health and Nutrition. We all do it at least three times a day. Eating and feeding our children can easily become an overwhelming task that we either succomb to or hide from. But it doesn't have to be that way! I believe that food was designed to nourish us in it's whole, natural state. And from my experience as everything from a raw vegan to vegetarian and even processed food carnivore, I have learned a lot about the value of food and some easy healthy ways to prepare it. Check back for regular recipes for the whole family.
Alternative Baby/Child Raising Techniques (e.g., baby-wearing, cloth-diapering, home-schooling, etc.). My daughter spent the first year of her life attached to my tummy and chest via our Mai Tai carrier while wearing pre-folds (a specific type of cloth diaper). That year taught me a lot! And I hope to share it here with you. As the product of a home-school education, I also have a plethora of valuable insight into making alternative education decisions for your children.
Birth/Labor/Pregnancy Support and Info. Pregnancy and labor isn't what it used to be. And that can be both a negative and positive thing. With all the options swirling around the newly pregnant mom, it can be hard to make such critical choices. As an experienced home-birther, I have my own perspective and want to share not only that, but also the experiences and opinions of all types of mamas so that you will be more empowered to make your own choices.
Home-life/Time Management. Whether you are a WAHM, SAHM or full-time working mom, the day in and day out of raising a family is tough. Add to that being conscious of your carbon footprint and the quality of food/toys/education you give your children and it's easy to get overwhelmed. Trust me. I live this! I hope this blog will offer real-life tips, tricks and simple encouragement to help prioritize these sweet days we have with our children.
Supporting Local Businesses. I am based out of Phoenix, AZ and firmly believe in supporting the local marketplace, so be on the lookout for many local recommendations. I'd also like to get your local recommendations from your cities, so I've created a place for local recommendations nation-wide. Know of a great farmer's market? Excellent soap maker? Great place to get second-hand or organic kid's clothes? Let us know and I'll link to them (organized alphabetically by city), using this world wide web to help connect us to our local vendors. You can email me (urbanearthmama (at) gmail (dot) com) or comment on any post and I'll put it up.
Book/Video/Blog/Product Recommendations. Let me start out by saying that I am not being compensated for any of this. I personally am sick and tired of not knowing how/why someone recommends a particular item and am sadly dissappointed when I find out it's because of financial compensation. Mamas are vulnerable--we want the best for our kids. And while only you will know what's right for you and your family, I hope to offer recommendations and suggestions for things I have personally used and appreciated--that means no hidden agendas here! Think of it as one earth mama helping another.
